Starting Over....

Can we have an honesty moment please? If someone were to ask me today, "What is your regimen?" I wouldn't have a clue. I have not carried out a full regimen since my daughter was born. I cowash whenever I need to restyle my hair, but that is it.

I can not tell you the last time that I DC'd (before this last post), moisturizing and sealing....yea I haven't done that in FOREVERRRR, I hadn't even been using a bonnet for crying out loud, I have no idea where my hair care routine went....but it definitely flew out of the window somewhere.

With that being said, of course my hair has taken some blows, so I decided to start over. I straightened my hair and decided to trim it.

Originally I only intended on trimming split ends, but once I got to the back of my hair....I knew that I could not avoid this situation any longer....I had to CHOP

Had a few strands that mananged to reach BSL, but see that gaping holey area in the pic of my hair wet? Yea that really bothered me, felt like it was hindering my hair, so the plan is the reconstruct my regimen and begin again.

My hair is soft, thick, fluffy! I am loving it, and I will probably wear it out for about 2 weeks, before putting it up and going back to PS.

Last time I trimmed my hair like this, it grew back pretty fast using Liquid Gold Sulfur Hair Oil
If you look at the middle picture, you can see that I did not trim that lil area in the middle, it was to short then, I would have been back to SL, so I just toughed it out, let it grow out some before cutting it. I think it is still a little thin area left back there, but I will just do like I did before and let it grow down some before cutting again.

Also, I am undecided on whether I want to transition or not. I am close to 4 months post relaxer, lots of new growth going on, and with the length of my hair there were a lot of tangles, I was debating just cutting the relaxed ends as the new growth came, so that it wouldn't just keep getting longer and more tangled,  but again I am undecided about whether I am ready to make this dream, become a reality or not. So right now I am taking it day by day, and until I make up my mind, no relaxers!

Every time I cut my hair it makes it that much more exciting to watch it grow back!

The Wash Day Experience!

In honoring my recommitment to growing my hair, or shall I say having healthy hair, I decided to participate in JGA and SOS Wash Day Experience.

When I say recomitting, well I never stopped caring for it, but my once, very detailed, very strict regimen, kinda resolved to a bare minimum do what I feel like doing, when I feel like doing it thing. Which is cool because I am a working wife and mother of 4, yes I stay pretty busy and I don't have 5 or 6 hours to dedicate to my hair....barely have an hour, but I digress.

With all of that being said, I decided to take the time to focus on total hair health, moreso than length and just maintaincing.

So this past wash day was nothing special. I had had a sew in in, for the past month. Took that down, after one month because my scalp was itching like CRAZY!

So anywho....Here goes my wash day experience:

#TextureShot

1. Took braids down and finger detailed.
2. Cowashed
  • with Organix Coconut Conditioner
  • parting hair in 6 sections bc my new growth is super thick.
  • Detangle with conditioner under running water.
3. Deep Conditioner mix:
  • Dollop of Organix Coconut Conditioner
  • 1 egg
  • 1 jar of  baby food  : Banana
  • 1 teaspoon of honey
  • 1 TBS of Honey
  • Let sit under plastic cap, with towel wrapped over head for 1 hour.
4. ACV Rinse
  • 1 part ACV, 2 part water.
  • Pour onto scalp, letting it run down the length of my hair.
  • Let sit for 2 minutes.
  • Rinse
5. Leave Ins
  • Part hair in four sections.
  • Lightly detangle
  • Light Trim
  • Apply Cantu Shea Butter Leave in conditioner onto each section, from tip to root.
6. Seal
  • Castor Oil
7. Oil scalp
  • Liquid Gold Sulfate Growth oil
8. Style:
  •  Braidout
  • Ehhh about 15 plaits/braids
  • set on flexi rods
  • let sit overnight
  • unraveled using Paul Mitchell Super Skinny hair serum.
The plaits were still wet, so despite the serum, it still grew as I went outside and it began to air dry.

Saving Our Daughters!?

When I first began my hair journey, I was considering going natural, but for what reason other than a "style", I didn't have one.
  • I didn't hate myself
  • I saw growing long healthy relaxed hair was possible
  • I did not have a daughter looking up to me.

Well every since I found out that Paisley was a girl, I went back and forth contemplating whether or not I should transition. Hearing naturals say that they transitioned for their daughters, to teach them to love their hair, it is admirable. After all, who wants their child to have self esteem issues? What mother wouldn't give the world for their child, much less their hair.

So what was stopping me? Well mostly the fact that transitioning is HARD...I would never BC, and  long term transitioning is just plain old hard if you can't commit to protective styles. So with every relapse to the texlax/relaxer I would try to make myself feel better by trying to convince myself that my hair has no reflection upon her self esteem.

My husband said it best "Just explain to her that she can't do what grown ups do." In saying that my choice to relax my hair or wear it straight, is a decision that I can knowledgeably make as an adult, she can not.

Although that made a lot of sense, I couldn't help but think, "When she looks up at mommy, she will see beauty. She will look up to me, want to look like me...I do matter in her perception of what is beautiful!"

That thought haunted me like a ghost.....UNTIL,

until, I put that thought along with my husband's statement: "She will look up to me, want to look like me. BUT she can not do things that grown ups do."

When she looks up to me, she won't just see straight hair, she will see high heels, she will see make up, and a wine glass :-)
If I were natural, she would want to wear lipstick like mommy, wear high heels like mommy, things that mommy chooses to wear, just like mommy chooses to straighten her hair. Paisley can not yet make those same choices.

However, I do still matter in her perception of what is beautiful, I can and will still have an impact on how she will feel about her own hair.

As parents we have to always be conscious of the things that we say and attitude that we project to any aspect of our kids lives, they pick up on that and gravitate to those same attitudes. We are all they know, we are their truth, of course they adopt our beliefs, thoughts and even opinions.

I was relaxed by my mom at like 4 or 5...have no recollection of my natural hair type, or even what it was like to get it combed, but I always grew up thinking that I had "bad" or unmanageable hair. To this day, I battle myself telling myself that I must be a 4B, for my mom to have relaxed it, even though my new growth looks close to those that are 4A....it is just engraved in my brain that I have "real ni**a hair...."yes that is what was said to me as a child.

So my point in saying all of that is that if you display a positive attitude about your children's hair, they too, will see it in a positive light.

  • Propery comb/manipulate it.
When detangling, combing, or brushing, start from the ends to the roots, carefully and painlessly working through the kinks and knots. ALWAYS moisturize before doing any type of manipulating. No snatching, no yanking, no breaking combs in the kid's hair.
  • Use proper hair utensils designed for their hair type.
Use wide tooth combs for kinky/curly hair, not small tooth combs or rat tail combs.
Use head bands or ponytail holders that will not easily tangle.
  • Develop a set regimen to maintain manageability.
Kind of self explanatory, but develope a routine specifically for her/him. They should not have the same identical routine or products used as you or their siblings. Find products that promote moisture and manageability, methods that reduce breakage, and styles that promote retention.
  • DON'T CALL IT NAPPY!
Uplift her hair, speak of it confidently, talk it up! Tell her it is beautiful, unique. Style it in ways that makes her proud and confident. If you seem to come in to trouble, don't talk bad about it, or appear frustrated. I encountered this with my son once, my mom and aunt are still the same.
My aunt will say to them "Ohh you got some nappy a$$ hair", or to me...in front of them.

One day my oldest asked me why is his hair so nappy. He has a high top cut or whatever it is called, and it has to be picked out every morning.  When he asked me that, I felt bad. He is my son, to me he is perfect...and I want him to see that in himself, so to contribute any part of himself a negative, just plain old hurt me.

I explained to him right then and there that his hair was not nappy, that it was just really curly, and sometimes the curls can get snagged on the comb or pick and that is why we have to take our time picking it out.
I can't say that he has mentioned it since then, but I hope I shut out any negative thoughts about himself and/or his hair.

  • Listen to your child and their hair.
If there are styles that she/he absolutely love and highly request, take note of those, those are the styles that they like, they make them feel happy, comfortable, and confident.

If there are styles that they tend to dislike, even if you like it mom, perhaps your child doesn't see it as being so complementive.

If you are combing and your child is jumping, clutching, or tensing up, you need a new method. It hurts...stop reevaluate your techniques!

As I mentioned earlier do not have "One size fits all products." If using one product seems to make their hair hard or dry, ditch it, and try a different a product.

Bottom line: Whether relaxed or natural, if you love your daughters hair, they will love it as well, you teach them to be proud and they will.!

Are you relaxed? Natural? How does your daughter respond to your hair? How have you helped or hindered the process?

Wash Day!

So more of my family and friends are becoming interested in hair care! YAY!!! Explaining a regimen may sound like a lot, trying to search for pertinent information in a blog, may be overwhelming. So to make things easier I decided to blog my wash days, and high light throughout the week!

Hopefully visualizing what I am doing to my hair can help others to get a more accurate idea.

Sunday was #WashDay
My wash days are nothing fancy....I simply cowash with Aussie Miraculously Smooth conditioner.
Method:

-Part hair in sections (2 or 4)
-Place conditioner on roots/scalp and work your way down.
-Rinse.
-Repeat on other side.
-I do it twice.

*Detangle*
-With hair still in sections.
I add more conditioner to that section and ONLY detangle hair under running water in shower.
I ONLY detangle using my Tangle Teezer.

My method of detangling is what has proven to work best for me and my hair.
You may have to try out different detangling utensils and methods for your hair.

*TShirt Dry*
-I blot dry using a tshirt, because it is less harsh than using bath towels.

*Leave In*
-used Dark N Lovely.

*Oiled Scalp*
-Liquid Gold Sulfur Oil.

Tossed in a bun and let air dry.

MONDAY

*Tea Rinse*
-On dry hair....I drenched in Black Tea.
(had unexpected errands to run, so by the time I made it back home, my hair had dried.)

*Deep Conditioned*
-On dry hair, I applied Aussie 3 Minute Miracle
(did that on top of the black tea rinse, though I would not reccomend anyone else doing it. Black tea can be very drying. It did not make my hair dry, but everyones hair will react differently to certain things.)

Also let the deep conditioner sit over night.

TUESDAY

-Rinsed Deep Conditioner Out.
-Leave In : Dark N Lovely
-Moisturized: Elasta QP Mango Butter
-Sealed: JBCO
-Oiled Scalp: JBCO

Wednesday

*GHE*
- Part hair in sections
-Moisturize: Elasta QP Mango Butter
-Oil Scalp: Liquid Gold Sulfur Oil
-Place plastic cap over head.
-Tie head scarf around cap
-Allow to sleep over night.

Thursday- Saturday, working and will be wigging it.

*This was not a typical wash week for me, usually I do not break my wash day into two days. I usually cowash and DC in the same day, but my schedule this week kind of threw me off a bit.*

A Journey is A Journey

A journey by definition reads:
  • trip somewhere: a trip or expedition from one place to another
  • process of development: a gradual passing from one state to another regarded as more advanced, e.g. from innocence to mature awareness
  • travel somewhere: to travel to a place or over a particular distance

  •    In this sense we referencing the second definition "the process of development; a gradula passiong from one state to another, regarded as more advanced."

A journey could be a baby going from the crawling to walking, babbling to speaking in full sentences, a journey, like my hair, going from an ignorant (unknowledgable) state, to becoming aware and making more educated based decisions.

Once I learned how certain products or ingredients effected my hair, I made a decision based on that knowledge to refrain from using them again. No matter how tempted I am, if a product contain Mineral Oil within the first 5 ingredients, it is not even a question, the answer is NO!

There are hair products that did me wrong, no matter how good of a review one blogger may give it, may make it sound like a godsend, no matter how good of a sale it is on, if it does not agree with my hair, again the answer is NO!

I say all of that to introduce my health and fitness journey. HEALTH AND FITNESS are the key words. Usually I just want to lose weight, by any means necessary. Which has proven to do just the opposite, so today I focus on health and fitness, weight loss is secondary.\

    What is the difference?
You may be wondering. I went to the gym today, weighed in.  My weight this week, was the same as last week. I became discouraged, and sad and did not feel like working out. "It's all for nothing!", I pouted.
Had health and fitness been the core reason, I would not have even weighed myself, or been bothered my the lack of progression.

So with my health and fitness journey, I will be focusing on making healthier, heart happy decisions. Food, exercises, parties, ect.

The plan is exercise at least 3x a week for an hour, try 5x if I can
    Eat clean 5x a week
Drink at least 1 gallon of water daily.
    Measure myself every two weeks,
and weigh myself only once a month!

With accepting that this is a lifestyle change, I am accepting that this will take longer than I would like it to. I have to train myself to say no, eat better. I have to steer away from everything that I have always known, and learn to really resist temptation. It will take a lot of effort and willpower, but I am ready!

I am claiming success, and putting it in the center of my universe.

    Fitness Friday: Bottoms up!

Today's post is centered on water intake. Water is your body's principal chemical component and makes up about 60 percent of your body weight. Every system in your body depends on water.

Besides the basic health related benefits and great skin that drinking water offers, many are interested in the role that it plays in weight loss, like myself.

So I have never been much of a water drinker...I don't drink juice or sodas (much) either...I just don't drink :-/ I could literally go all day and only drink maybe 8 ounces of water.

For the longest, I would try to drink a gallon a day, that seemed just impossible I mean WHO can actually do that? Well I am proud to announce that for the past four days I have finally tackled that task!!

    LET ME TELL YOU HOW!

    1. Buy a jug that you can take anywhere with you!
    2.Exercise
    3. Feeling hungry? DRINK!!!!

I bought me a 2.2 Liter water jug, and realized that 1.5 jugs would make 1 gallon. So it started with me drinking water first thing upon waking up, before eating anything. I then realized that if I take it with me everywhere I go, I would always have time to drink up! Most of the time I use the excuse of having a life to not being able to drink all day. Well in the car, at a stop light, I chug it....often times, my bladder feels like it is going to burst and I quickly regret that decision....I am still working out the kinks lol. I also noticed that when I exercise that is a gauranteed way to get more water in...so make sure you add exercise into your regimen! Lastly, I realized that whenever my mouth would get watey (salivating) I tend to snack...well I now recognize that as a sign of thirst, so whenever I think of snacking, I drink water instead...all of this has allowed me to get more water in.

So yes drinking more water has made me eat less, not less meals per se, but less snacking in general. Water also makes you feel full...so if you have been drinking water all day and are feeling full, when your mouth gets watery your brain is more likely to recognize that as thirst, opposed to hunger.

This is day 4 for me. I am posing a pro at this, still I am proud of myself, and hope to keep it up! I can say that it is about training your body to do what you want it to do. If you don't want to snack, you will have to fight through some temptations until your body realizes that it isn't going to happen, and the cravings will eventually begin to subside. If you want to drink more water, like me, you may have to force yourself to do so, don't just drink when you "feel" thirsty. A lot of times me misconstrue the signs for thirst to being that of hunger, hence the fact that many of us eat wayyyy more than we drink.

When in reality...we can not live without any water intake for more than a week, while we can make it up to 10 weeks without food, that lets me know that water is pretty important!

Well I just wanted to share with you all this week's fitness milestone!!! YAYY ME!!  Truly trying to convert this weight loss/ team healthy journey into a lifestyle, trying to make it my home!

Thank you all for reading, hope you lovelies have an amazing weekend, and remember...

    3 Steps To Longer Hair!

    1.  Moisturize

Weekly Deep conditioning, baggying, GHE, sprtizing, moisture creams, leave in conditioners, cowashing, DRINK PLENTY OF WATER!!!

    2. Strengthening

Protein treatments, protein based conditioners and creams & proper protein intake.

    3. Protect

    Protect ends from becoming split or broken by opting for protective styles;
Braids, sew ins, weaves, wigs, buns, Bantu knots, ect.

Another way to protect is by limiting manipulation & usage of direct heat.
Low manipulation styles; braid out, twist out, Bantu knot outs, wash n go's, ect.

Alternatives to direct heat would include, roller sets opposed to flat ironing or blow outs & using the cool setting on hand held blow dryers or opting for air dry methods.

    Fitness Friday: Smoothies vs Juicing

Hey all! It is Spring Break...I worked out maybe twice this week. Most of my workouts take place at home....working out at home with 4 kids (5, bc my 7 year old sister was over all week), is a joke. Ok, that is really an excuse, I could have exercised while they were outside playing, but I didn't. I was Spring cleaning...No I really was!

Anywho, I will go hard, next week. In the mean time, I was considering juicing for weight loss.

    What is "Juicing"?
Juicing fresh fruit and vegetables works by providing the body with a vast array of living, vital nutrients in a form that it can easily absorb, because juicing breaks down or eliminates the fiber in fruits and veggies.
Juicing also helps to cleanse the body of toxins and assists in its processes of repair and regeneration.

    Is Juicing better than Smoothies?

It is almost impossible to say one is better than the other, they both are great and healthy choices. Let

    Juicing Pros
    • Without fiber, you can really load up on some nutrients. You can only drink so much, without fiber taking up some of  the volume, leaves room for more nutrients!
    •  Easier to digest than eating whole fruits and vegetables

    Cons
    • Juicing eliminates fiber. One of the health benefits of eating more fruits and vegetables is to increase your source of heart- and digestive-healthy fiber.
    • More expensive by volume. For example, if you made a 1-quart smoothie you might use 1 cucumber, 1-2 bananas, and 1-2 handfuls of greens plus some water. But a quart of green juice you might use 2 large cucumbers, ½-1 bunch of celery, an entire bunch of dark leafy greens, plus 1-2 handfuls of herbs.

Because smoothies contain fiber, which is filling, making you feel full, they are a super healthy, low-calorie meal replacement.

Between drinking a smoothie, as a meal replacement, and getting in a good amount of water during the day, you should never really feel hungry. That is my plan for the next few days.

Also in the plan is cutting of fast food PERIOD!
I always rationalize what I am getting (i.e. salads or wraps), or try to negotiate caloric intake per meal. Well I realized that fast food joints are not just wrecking havoc on my hips, but my wallet as well.

All today I craved a Wendy's salad...all day I had to remind myself NO! The old me would bargain with the inner fatty lol, I'm having to train myself to shut her down, she is spoiled, she is manipulative, and she has been having her way for to long.

These #FitnessFriday posts, are really keeping me focused. Even when I feel discouraged, I write, and realize that it is only one step at a time, one day at a time, and everyday that I make an effort, is one day closer to my goal.

    Hairfinity!!!!

So I finally broke down and gave in to the "Hairfinity" temptation! I was just curious, I am satisifed with my progress so far that I have made on my own, except for my damn trimming....BUT I left that in 2013 MOVE ON!

Anywho back to Hairfinity, I just started taking them about 4 days ago so this is NOT a review, I will do a review after a month on the product itself.

What I can say is that the shipment was pretty speedy. I ordered on a Friday morning, got reciept for shipment on Monday, they were in my mailbox on Wednesday! I used standard shipping, as well.

Also the pills, are encapsulated, as you can see in the picture above...I am HORRIBLE at taking pills, they are usually hard to swallow and often feel like they are stuck in my throat. I have experienced non of that with these pills so far. They go down easy peasy and I am not mad at that.

I have only taken them after eating, so I can not say if they are ok to take on an empty stomach. I took biotin on an empty stomach once and almost DIED!!!!!!!! I felt so nauseated that it hurt! Since then I have not taken the risk of taking vitamins of any sort on an empty stomach.

The day that I recieved the pills, I got my hair braided, as a protective style. I plan to keep them up for two weeks, and then do a mini length check and review at that time, but I will do another at the end of my second bottle when I have seen true results.

I am saving my "before" picture, for the length comparisons.

If you are interested in Hairfinity vitamins the link to order is here.
    Here are the ingredients:

Are there any side effects? This is the statement that you will find on their website:

"Hairfinity is a natural supplement and 100% drug free. At this time, there are no clinically proven negative side effects of taking these vitamins. "

However keep in mind that these are vitamins and as seen on the Supplement Facts most of them exceeds the daily value percentage, meaning that you are taking in more of that vitamin than your body requires. Taking them everyday could result in toxicity of certain vitamins which could cause various reactions dependant upon the individual and their tolerance or sensitivity.

Should you have any health problems or concerns, see your physician beforehand. Should you begin feeling side effects or symptons that  you think are related to the vitamins, stop taking them and see a physician as well.

So far I have experienced no adverse reactions, again have only been taking for 4 days, however a few complaints that I have read OTHERS experience are constipation, pimples, intensified migraines, and itchy scalp.

HAVE YOU TAKEN HAIRFINTIY BEFORE??? SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US!!!

    Fitness Friday: On the Grid!!!

She is back at it!!! Clean eating, and 1st week of "30 Day Shred" down. My actual weigh in day is Monday morning, so I won't be able to say how it is going until then, but I feel pretty good about it. Jillian Michaels' work out is pretty GOOD!!! Which means it is challenging but not impossible, it isn't discouraging and it's a mix of everything and not to much of one thing.

Like with T25, certain days were set for cardio....there is such thing as too much cardio!! When your chest starts to hurt, you can barely breath, and you just want to cry...lol I mean, yea I pushed past it, so it wasn't impossible either....but I will say those days it was quite discouraging and took A LOT of mental motivation to even "push play", simply because I knew the pain I was about to subject myself to!

Anywho "30 Day Shred" Level 1... is a pretty comfortable level for me,  5 days down, 5 to  go and then on to Level 2....I should at least check out Level 2 ahead of time and prepare myself, I always think the worst possible painful workout ever lol.

I decided to do the 30 Day Shred because it was a bit upsetting that I fell off weight wise, with T25.... I mean I can't blame the program, it was doing what it is designed to do.... I just wasn't doing my part. I was discouraged and thinking of starting ALL the way over with T25 was like "AHHHHHHHH!!! It is a 10 week program.

I wanted something quicker, more simple, something that I felt like I could do. Not to say that I could not start over with T25, but the whole 10 weeks to complete upset me, so I decided to do 30 Day Shred. It says to lose up to 20 lbs in those 30 days....I am not expecting that, but if I can just get back to where I was when I finished the Alpha round of T25 (152 lbs) that would be great!

One thing I am trying to do is cut back on the wine....SHE HAS FOUR KIDS....SHE NEEDS WINE!!! Yea she needs to lose these last few pounds too, get it together! LOL

Anyway in conclusion I have realized that eating better, makes me feel better...eating like a fat ass makes me feel like a fat ass....and who wants to feel that way? Why do that to yourself

That about sums it up!! Feeling hopeful, motivated and determined YAY!!!!

Ok, looking the number of exclamation marks,it is probably obvious that I have ran into some issues. Well 1…I have gained weight WHILE exercising consistently…and before you swear it is muscle mass….IT IS NOT!!!!
From my progress pics of times when I was successful
compared with today, I have a gut again…and I am too mad to take set back pictures. This is what inspired this post….one thing in weight loss journey, well in MY experience has proven to be true:
    "YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT!"

Anyone who tell you “You basically can eat anything as long as you are burning more calories than you eat,” THEY ARE LYING!!!!
Well not necessarily so, but I guess it will just make you skinny fat. When I was clean eating, eating lean meats, I look lean! I wasn’t at my goal weight, but my body was taking shape! I would look in the mirror in my sports bra and do a little rocking body pump! Now I avoid the mirror all together (again).
I am mad about having to start over AGAIN! I am mad, because I had a formula that WORKED!!! I was eating clean, never hungry, working out, and losing weight!!! WHAT HAPPENED!?!?!?
I got greedy….decided that I would lose more weight faster, by eating LESS…by eating less, I deprived myself, which lead to hunger, feeling hunger lead to over eating, over eating lead to…..eating whatever was in sight, eating whatever was in sight lead to a reappearing gut!!
On the plus side I can say that I am still working out, so I am still physically fit (sort of)…I can run for a whooping 20 minutes now!!! that is major for me lol, so in order to get back on track all I have to do is get my diet in order.
I just bought Jillian Micheals 30 day Shread, because I mentally feel like I can take it on, and with proper dieting, I hope that I can lose the 20 pounds in 30 days as advertised. I am still doing T25, because I love Beta round it just does not have as high of a calorie burn as I would like.
So I am starting over…clean eating on Monday…AGAIN! I am so mad…my new motto is “I workout like a beast….why eat like a pig”… it truly says something about your diet/eating habits when you gain weight WHILE working out…smh.

Confessions of the Girl With Long Hair????

Anybody who knows me, knows that I do not consider myself to having "long hair", I am APL...been here for a year and a half now...but hey who is complaining...anywho, being submerged into this world of hair care, I know plenty with much longer, fuller, and in my opinion more beautiful hair. Not to say that mine is not those things, but I just don't consider my own hair anything to "crush" over. Anyway that is neither here nor there, I have stumbled upon a rather unexpected "hairmotion"....that is my made up word to describe an emotion derived from my hair lol....it is the feeling :

    Shame.

I don't know it is weird huh? It is like when people compliment my hair, I always find a way to down play how much I love my hair :-/ How proud I am of my hair :-/ I am all of those things, but when it draws the attention of others, I seem to cower at the idea of promoting hair care or, how seriously I care for my hair.

For instance...someone says "Why do you wear weave, when you got a head full of hair"?
I say "Because I don't feel like dealing with this mess!"....

    1. I actually hate referring to my hair as "mess", because it is far from that, but I think that if I refer to it as such, then it deflects my genuine adoration for my hair lol.
    2. The first thing that actually comes to mind is to explain "Protective Styles". But I think I am over trying to explain hair care, to people who simply just don't get it.

OR...Even Worse...Somone compliments me on how beautiful my hair is...and again, I will say
"this mess"....Kinda like someone who has just spent hours (or lots of money getting dressed...they get complimented and say "Oh this old thing?"

    What is it with that!?!

I know apart of me feels awkward because they are complimenting on something that they could very well achieve themselves, with just a tad bit of effort. Hair care has been one of the easiest challenges that I have ever faced, unlike weight loss, if I have a lazy week, it does not result in a major set back....I am so tired of fluctuating weight lol...guess I should stop having so frequent lazy days lol....anywho when they compliment me...I kinda want to tell them...Hey this could be you...but I don't want to offend anyone, or solicite unwanted advise, so I kinda just shut down completely...probably calling it "a mess". To just shut down the whole hair conversation...if I go into detail as to what I do they will say "You do too much!"...and I will be compelled to say...."I do a lot....I have a lot of hair...you do to little and you have..........."

Yea I'd rather just facetiously call my hair "a mess." lol

Have you ever felt ashamed or "awkward" about your hair progress?

    Blow Drying: The Tension Method

    What is "The Tension Method"?

The Tension Method, is when you use tension to stretch out your new growth or kinky hair, oppose to blwing out by combing  while drying.

    How To:

    • Wash/Cowash your hair
    • Detangle under running shower.
    • Blot hair dry with towel, or T-shirt dry.
    • Section hair in desired amount of sections.
    • Hold a section of your hair taut (preferrably a smaller section if using four section, for quicker dry  time)
    • With the other hand angleyour hand held dryer in the direction the hair is going, if you have a concentration nozzle, it would be great to use it.
I would suggest using warm or cold air settings.
I was impatient and used hot....here are my results:

If you decide to use "Hot air", remember to apply a heat protectant beforehand.

I pretty much got the results of a "blow out", without the harsh combing and  breakage. So I definietly say that it is a winner! Next time I decide to straighten my hair out, this will definitely be my method of drying, simply to limit the heavy manipulation, that comes with blowing out.

Have you tried the Tension Method before? What were your results? What is your method?

How I Saved A Sloppy Braid Out!!

Well let's see here, I cowashed my hair with Aussie Moist, deep conditioned with a lame deep conditioner that I can not remember the name of, but will do a review on, as soon as I get to it.
I then set my hair, in about 8 plaits (I normally do 4, I was going for a faux fro look). I then, rolled each plait on a pink perm rod.

I let them sit overnight. Upon waking up, I took them down and it looked a mess! I am sorry, it was such a mess that I did not even bother to take a picture. My intentions were not to "save" it, but to just rock this hideous turn out because I was too lazy to figure out anything else.

So I ran morning errands, and went to the gym. Because I did not care for my hair style, I did not bother tying my hair down or protecting it from the sweat and humidity, so braidout out and free, I went to my Spinning class.

I leave the gym and next thing I know, I have a frizzy, slightly braid out defined, puff on my head that I managed to shape into a faux fro!

WaaaLA! Tossed on some makeup to make it look like it was an on purpose fierce relaxed hair fro and called it a day!?!? LOL

    Black Tea Rinse... FINALLY!

Hello all!!! Well I FINALLY did a black tea rinse. I say finally because I bought a box of black tea like 2 months ago, when I was going through postpartum shedding. Unfortunately the bum in me, would never fully prepare for my wash days ahead of time, and was always to lazy to quickly brew some tea.

Well, I am not certain whether or not I am still experiencing postpartum shedding, my edges have grown back in alright, but I am still experiencing a lot of hair coming out into my brushes, well not a lot , but more than I would like. I have been to lazy to look and see if they were long, shedded hair, or short and broken pieces.

So I cowashed and deep conditoned my hair two days ago!
    Cowashed with Aussie Moist
Deep Conditioned with a mix of bananas, EVOO,& Honey....TRUTH IT IS!!!

So I thought to myself, "my hair is fairly clean, I suppose...do a tea rinse"

I boiled about 2 1/2-3 cups of water and used 3 tea bags.
I let it sit and cool off for maybe 30-40 minutes, it was still warm as I poured it on my dry hair.
I let it sit for another 30-45 minutes.
Rinsed it off in the shower, the lastly I cowashed 1x using Aussie Moist.

I felt as if I could physically feel my hair feeling stonger, but this is the first time, so I do not feel comfortable to "Review" it.

My hair never felt stiff or hard, and I was pressed for time, so I omitted the deep conditioner.\
I brushed my hair into a sock bun, and headed out of  the door.

I will try to incorporate this into my regimen every two weeks, alternating with ACV rinses.

    Product Review: Scunci Evolution

Have any of you ran into these little critters??? How do I describe them??? I guess they are made out of rubber....but not like rubber bands...It is the thicker, rubber I guess....kinda like "Jellies" sandals. Anywho LOOOOOVE!!!!

They are super secure and seem to mold or fit your hair however you want them to. Like with the seamless, or ouchless, ponytail holders you would have to wrap them around for them to hold a true pony, maybe it is just my thick hair, but I can slide these babies on and without wrapping, it secures my hair. Not in a true all day ponytail style, but to hold hair to the side, while working with the other side, or even to bun it...I did not have to double it up to secure the hair.

My hair did not snag or get caught in them. When taking them out, I did not unwrap...I carefully just slid it off (I only doubled it, so it was not wrapped around too tight).
    These babies are like heaven!!
I hate to give it a 5 out of 5 because, I don't really believe in perfect products, but I can say that they are definitely perfect for me and my hair, so a 5 out of 5 it has earned.

    • Fits securely
    • Does not snag
    • Affordable
    • Easy to remove
    • Does not cause breakage
    • Does not get tangled in hair.
    LOOOOOOVE!

    Flashback Friday

Just looking back on the beginning of my journey and now.

How do I feel about it... I feel like I trimmed waaaaayyyy to often in 2013 trying to achieve that perfect blunt shape....which I still do not have!  So I definitely believe that that played apart in my slow (appearing) progress (I have been APL FOREVER!) ...I should be BSL by now, but I shall not complain! I remember believing that it would be impossible for me to even reach APL and look at me now!!!

I hope to achieve BSL by the end of the year at least. I need to get back to using my Liquid Gold!! All of this wearing my hair straight, kinda held me up from using that as well. It's growing season for me!! But to all the newbies who may stumble across my humble little blog, please no matter the number of set backs you may have, this is not a race, just remain consistent and do what works for YOU!!! Don't let anyone convince you that they know more about your hair than you do.

One thing I kept reading, when I myself was new: "Listen to your hair. It will let you know what it needs."

    GOOD LUCK BABY DOLLS!!!!

    Valentine's Day Hair!!!!

So some of you may be aware that I had special plans for Valentine's Day, which also included getting my hair professionally done, as I never allow anyone to do my hair.  Soooo any I washed my hair the night before, detangled it in the shower....it turned into this:
A mess right, so I moisturized it, sealed it, and just tossed it into a bun. Well when I got to the beautician, I learned that she would be working out of her home, which to me was no problem, as long as I look equally as fabulous right???

Well being at her house, of course she had to wash my hair  in her sink....I should have just opted out of the washing, but I requested a "Silk Out", which someone explained to me as having to use certain products, so I assumed that she had to wash my hair with her products specifically for a silk out....no such thing.  I guess us country folk, refer to a "Blow Out" as a "Silk Out", because that is what I got.... but back to my rambling...I  got a bit confused/embarrased because she seemed to be having a hard time combing through it ...and so she asked "Did you not detangle it?" This was after, she had washed it in the sink...."Uhmmmm Yea, I detangled it yesterday after washing it." Of course, I did just toss it  in a bun and perhaps it  became a bit tangled by that, but also didn't I just hold my head upside down under a sink? Would that not cause it to tangle a bit?

Her attempts at detangling, was not with a wide tooth comb...I mean I know that no one will treat your hair the way that you do....but still I was a bit troubled by that....I felt like my hair was hurting :-(  I felt like....I always do, when I let others do my hair...lol "This will definitely result in a set back"
    I'm just paranoid.

Also....WE (Hairlistas) know not to really manipulate the hair while it is soaking wet, beauticians of course being pressed for time just GO...so that was pretty nerve wrecking...then as it gets a bit drier, she says "The more it dries the easier it is to comb through...." NO DUHHHHHH.... but I can't say that can I?

Anywho...after the blowing out process...Which I will say...that I am not bashing the beautician at all. I realize that when I blow my own hair out, I even recieve some sort of breakage (hair on the floor)... and I just know how to manipulate my own hair...of course even better than a beautician who's first time is touching my hair...when I do it weekly!

Anyway, after that was over, the straightening part was a breeze. No complaints....well there is one, she did put some serum on my hair, for frizziness, I did not see that it said anything about thermal protection. She then suggested that I do the same, flat iron on "naked" hair so that, it will be light and flowy..... I can try to omit the moisturizer, perhaps I am a bit product heavy on my hair, maybe I can spritz with a leave in conditioner and then seal with Grapeseed oil, lightly applied, since Grapeseed oil is a heat protectant in itself.

Anywho, down to the nitty gritty...after my hair was done ...I of course had NO complaints!!!!

Hubster and I went and took  pictures outside, the wind was blowing and my hair was allll over the place, it probably wouldn't have hurt to be a bit weighed....is there such thing as too soft...it wouldn't even hold any curls!! But as I said before, I had no complaints! My last relaxer was in November, but she had me feeling like I had a fresh BONE straight perm! WOOP WOOP!

Here are a few pics from Valentine's Day <3

We took professional photos, then went to dinner, and ended the night with painting!! It was a lovely day if I must say so! I am soooo late writing this post, but thanks for reading anyway :-*

    HeatLESS Curls!

Soooo apparently I suck! No updates what so ever...BUT I kinda have a good reason :-)
I was enjoying my hair...for pretty much the entire month of Feburary, my hair was straight...when it is straightened, I do very little to it....no washing of course, and very minimal product usage.

I was however beginning to become bored with my hair, as it is either in a braid out or bone straight.
I do not know how to roller set my hair so it is rarely left with any body, when straight. Any who upon searching on Youtube, I learned how to achieve some sexy heat less curls using flexi rods!

I was in hair heaven!!! I re-rolled the curls each night, it was really easy, and most times I did not comb through, finger combing was enough. Anywho, I could have kept it going for ever, but uhhh eventually I had to wash my hair.... and when I did...

It went from this:... to this:.... but that is a whoooole nother post :-)

    Hair Blah!!!

I really need to step my game up in the hair department.  My hair "care" has dropped to hair maintenence. In a nutshell I pretty much, cowash and DC weekly. I am sure that I throw in moisture in there as needed and seal, as well as oil the scalp.

But what about the extra stuff:

    ACV rinses
    Tea rinses
    Baggying
    Vitamins
    GHE'ing and all the sorts.

I mean I do have children so condensing it all is very resonable, but what about the health of my hair opposed to just growing hair? Sure I want long hair, but I want HEALTHY hair!

With that being said, I am making Feburary count!

For Valentine's Day I am getting a Hydrating Steam Treatment and Silk out because my hunny loves my hair straight. I will be sure to note how my hair reacts to the steam treatment as I am up in the air on whether to buy one or not.

I am horrible at taking pills, but I found some chewable Biotin and I think that will be more convenient and aid in my consistency of  taking them. I usually get choked up on pills, or hate having to swallow them, it's complicated. I am hoping for great results with the chew tabs.

Sometime this month I plan on implementing the Inversion Method. I know I have said this before, but I never seem to finish through. I have devised a plan that will hopefully aid in me being able to keep up with the plan.

I also plan to blog more. IDK why, I guess because I am hair lazy and don't do anything special, I rarely have things to blog about but that will change today. I will post every Thursday.

Well here is to getting it together! Any special plans for Valentine's Day, special Hair styles??? SPILL IT ALL HERE!
